Uses as a Drug

Gris-PEG is a medication formulated especially for the treatment of ringworm infections, such as athlete’s foot, barber’s itch and ringworm of the different parts of the body such as the groin, thigh, nails and scalp.

As Gris-PEG is specifically used to treat ringworm infections, accurate diagnosis is important. Adults should be given a daily dose of 330 mg in single or divided amounts. Children should be treated with 3.3 mg per pound of body weight daily

Safety Precautions

Gris-PEG can cause light sensitivity. So, avoid getting exposed to intense light, whether natural or artificial. Inform your doctor if you develop a lupus-like condition called lupus erythematosus. This condition has symptoms such as arthritis, sensitivity to sunlight, weakness, tiredness, skin eruptions and a red butterfly-shaped rash spread over the nose and cheeks. If you are using Gris-PEG for long periods of time, your kidney, liver and blood cell production should be monitored regularly. Also note that the medication reduces the effectiveness of contraceptive pills. Men should only father a child six months after the end of their Gris-PEG therapy and women should not get pregnant during therapy.

Missed Dose

Do not double dose on Gris-PEG. So, take the missed dose only if you remember early enough to have a big gap between the missed dose and the next scheduled dose.

Side Effects

Gris-PEG can produce side effects of the hypersensitivity type. These include skin rashes and even sometimes, angioneurotic edema. If these side effects occur, the patient may have to withdraw from the therapy. Those that have undergone extended therapy may experience paresthesias of the hands and feet. Other side effects you may look out for are diarrhea, dizziness, epigastria distress, fatigue, headache, insomnia, mental confusion, nausea, oral thrush and vomiting. Performance during usually routine activities may actually be impaired as well. Discontine Gris-Peg if granulucytopenia occurs.

Other Information

Gris-PEG increases, decreases or alters the effects of other drugs taken in conjunction with it. For example, it heightens the effects of alcohol but decreases the effectiveness of contraceptive pills. Inform your doctor if you are using blood-thinning drugs such as Phenobarbital before taking Gris-PEG.
