Skin Care

What is the function of the skin?

We don’t tend to think of the skin as an organ, but it is. In fact, the skin is the largest organ of the body. It serves many functions, including acting as a protective shield against injury and infection, and regulating body temperature. The skin also contains nerves that allow us to sense heat, cold, pressure, touch and pain. The skin is made up of three layers, with each performing specific functions. The thin outer layer of the skin is called the epidermis. It helps protect the rest of the body. The epidermis also contains cells that produce skin pigment. The middle layer of the skin is called the dermis. It contains sweat glands that cause us to perspire when we’re hot. The deepest layer of the skin is the subcutaneous tissue. It consists of collagen and fat cells. The subcutaneous layer helps conserve the body’s heat, and acts as a “shock absorber” to help protect against injury to other organs.

At our Drug Store, we have skin care creams and medications to heal and protect all three layers of your skin.

What causes skin infections and skin imperfections?

Skin infections are most commonly caused by bacteria. They can also be caused by fungi or viruses.

Many bacteria normally live on the surface of the skin, and healthy skin usually provides a highly effective barrier against infections. But a break in the skin can permit some bacteria to penetrate and cause infection. Certain medical conditions such as diabetes can also create a greater risk for skin infections. That’s because diabetes causes poor blood flow and reduced sensation in the skin, especially in the feet. Injury or cuts in the skin may go unnoticed, allowing infection to set in. Wounds in diabetics also take longer to heal, which leads to increased infection. Diabetics may also have dry, cracked skin, which can allow germs to enter and cause infection. Skin damaged by sunburn, scratching or other irritation is also more likely to get infected. Bacterial skin infections can occur almost anywhere on the body. They can start as something small such as a pimple or a cut, or may affect a larger area. They can range in seriousness from a minor skin infection that heals on its own to a life-threatening condition.
