Uses as a Drug

Famvir is antiviral prescription medication that is taken orally for the treatment of recurrent genital herpes in patients with no other medical conditions. The drug suppresses recurrent genital herpes, recurrent herpes simplex virus infections (genital herpes and cold sores) in those with HIV and those suffering from herpes zoster (shingles).

If you are being treated for a genital herpes outbreak as or when it occurs, you can take 125 mg pills of Famvir two times a day for 5 days.

If you are using Famvir to suppress outbreaks, you can take 250 mg pills two times a day for a maximum duration of a year.

If you have HIV and herpes simplex, take 500 mg pills two times a day for 7 days.

No matter what your treatment is like, you can take Famvir with or without food.

Safety Precautions

If you are allergic to pencicolver (Denavir), which is a component of Famvir, talk to your doctor first. Also mention if you have kidney disease. Your doctor may give you a dosage adjustment or monitor your treatment closely. Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant or breastfeeding. Only take Famvir during pregnancy if there are more benefits than potential risks.

Missed Dose

Do not double dose on Famvir. Take your missed dose as soon as you remember but skip that dose if it is almost time for the next scheduled dose.

If you experience an allergic reaction, immediately stop taking Famvir and call for emergency medical attention. Milder side effects include diarrhea, dizziness, headache, itching, nausea, tingling and vomiting. You may continue taking Famvir but inform your doctor about your side effects.
