Acyclovir is a prescription drug formulated to relieve symptoms of herpes infections, such as pain and itching. It does not cure herpes but it does promote healing and prevent another outbreak. Acyclovir can also be used to treat chicken pox.
Take Acyclovir as prescribed by your doctor. Continue taking it until you complete your prescribed treatment period even if you feel a lot better before. Only discontinue as advised by your doctor. Swallow the tablet with a whole glass of water, with or without food.
Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant or breastfeeding. Also mention if you suffer from renal impairment or if you have received nephrotoxic agents. If you have been diagnosed with Herpes Zoster, you should get treated immediately. Acyclovir, however, is not a cure.
Take a missed dose as soon as you remember. However, do not double dose by taking the missed dose when it is almost time for the next one.
The side effects of Acyclovir may vary. Report symptoms immediately if you experience an allergic reaction, unusual weakness, tremor, confusion, abdominal pain, redness, increased thirsts, reduced amount of urine passed, hallucinations and peeling or loosening of skin. Milder symptoms include loss of appetite, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness and increased sensitivity to the sun.
Store Acyclovir at room temperature, which is between 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. Keep away from light and moisture. Discard expired medication and keep away from children.
An overdose of Acyclovir may result to agitation, lethargy, seizures and even a coma. It may be the result of getting high doses or taking unmonitored bolus injections. Renal failure can occur due to the fact that when fluid and electrolyte balance is not monitored, serum creatinine and BUN are elevated.
Tell your doctor about your medical history, lifestyle and all the medicines you are taking. Also talk about whether you smoke, use illegal drugs or drink alcohol or caffeine.
