Zanaflex, as a muscle relaxant, helps relax some muscles in your body. It can relieve spasms caused by medical problems such as spinal injury and multiple sclerosis. Your doctor may also prescribe it for other conditions.
Zanaflex comes as an oral tablet that is typically taken two or three times a day. Make sure you follow the medications’ prescription label. If there are parts that are unclear, ask your doctor or pharmacist. Take only as prescribed by your doctor.
Inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, have low blood pressure or if you are taking medicine that treats high blood pressure. Also tell your doctor if you are taking birth control pills. The mentioned conditions and medications may make your doctor decide not to give you Zanaflex after all or you may be given a lower dose combined with monitoring during your treatment. Also talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant or breastfeeding. It has not yet been determined whether or not Zanaflex causes harm to the unborn child or the nursing baby.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. If the latter is true, just skip the dose and proceed with the rest of the scheduled doses for the day.
Zanaflex can cause some side effects. Tell your doctor if your symptoms persist or worsen. Symptoms include dizziness, upset stomach, tingling sensation, vomiting, dry mouth and increased muscle spasms. Call for emergency medical attention if you experience flu-like symptoms or jaundice.
Keep Zanaflex tightly closed in its original container, away from heat and moisture. Keep it away from the reach of children. Do not take expired medication and ask your pharmacist on how to properly dispose the medicine.
If you suspect an overdose, call for emergency medical aid. Irregular breathing and unconsciousness may be signs but the symptoms of Zanaflex overdose are not really well known.
Zanaflex may cause dizziness and drowsiness, especially when used with alcohol, sleep or anxiety medicines, pain medication and other muscle relaxants. Be cautious when performing activities that may be potentially dangerous.
